Logistics from China: How to Reduce Costs Without Sacrificing Speed

How businesses can save on shipments from China: five practical strategies

The right choice of transportation mode, long-term supply planning, and proper document preparation can significantly reduce logistics costs when working with China. At the same time, cost savings are typically achieved not through a single solution, but through a combination of factors, according to Andrey Kogan, Chairman of the China Committee of the Association of Exporters and Importers.

One of the key ways to reduce logistics costs when working with China is to select the most appropriate transportation mode based on the actual cargo volume. In practice, this requires a careful assessment of the economics of each shipment. For example, when shipping volumes are around 40 cubic meters, using a dedicated 40-foot container may be more cost-effective than transporting goods as consolidated cargo.

A substantial portion of hidden costs is associated with the quality of document preparation. Timely and accurate documentation helps avoid delays during customs clearance in Russia and, consequently, prevents additional expenses related to storage, transport downtime, and customs declaration adjustments.

In some cases, additional optimization opportunities may arise from choosing the appropriate mode of transportation. Despite its relatively high cost, air freight can be economically justified for high-value and fast-moving goods.
